Summary

A full-speed-ahead oral history of the nearly two-decade making of the cultural phenomenon Mad Max: Fury Road—with more than 130 new interviews with key members of the cast and crew, including Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and director George Miller, from the pop culture reporter for The New York Times, Kyle Buchanan。

It won six Oscars and has been hailed as the greatest action film ever, but it is a miracle Mad Max: Fury Road ever made it to the screen… or that anybody survived the production。 The story of this modern classic spanned nearly two decades of wild obstacles as visionary director George Miller tried to mount one of the most difficult shoots in Hollywood history。

Production stalled several times, stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron clashed repeatedly in the brutal Namib Desert, and Miller’s crew engineered death-defying action scenes that were among the most dangerous ever committed to film。 Even accomplished Hollywood figures are flummoxed by the accomplishment: As the director Steven Soderbergh has said, “I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film, and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead。”

Kyle Buchanan takes readers through every step of that moviemaking experience in vivid detail, from Fury Road’s unexpected origins through its outlandish casting process to the big-studio battles that nearly mutilated a masterpiece。 But he takes the deepest dive in reporting the astonishing facts behind a shoot so unconventional that the film’s fantasy world began to bleed into the real lives of its cast and crew。 As they fought and endured in a wasteland of their own, the only way forward was to have faith in their director’s mad vision。 But how could Miller persevere when almost everything seemed to be stacked against him?

With hundreds of exclusive interviews and details about the making of Fury Road, readers will be left with one undeniable conclusion: There has never been a movie so drenched in sweat, so forged by fire, and so epic in scope。

The journey it took to get this amazing movie made could be an entire movie itself。 In fact, maybe it should be。 Terrific book!

Started this a while ago but obviously took my time getting through it。 A pretty remarkably comprehensive accounting of the marathon journey that brought this masterpiece to the screen, and it really captures what it feels like when the dream everyone has on every single film set finally comes true。 Everyone says we're crazy, but just look, just look what we did out there。 Started this a while ago but obviously took my time getting through it。 A pretty remarkably comprehensive accounting of the marathon journey that brought this masterpiece to the screen, and it really captures what it feels like when the dream everyone has on every single film set finally comes true。 Everyone says we're crazy, but just look, just look what we did out there。 。。。more

I enjoyed this account of the making of this movie-great insights。 Really amazing to see just how hard pulling off this kind of movie is。 Made watching it again really fun。 I highly recommend。

A really compelling oral history of one of the most bonkers film productions of all time。 Mad Max: Fury Road was an anomaly, a troubled Hollywood production that, despite endless setbacks and complications, became an instant classic。 Buchanan has done a stellar job consolidating the various rumors and production stories into a cohesive narrative which is as enjoyable as it is thorough。

love oral histories, and love cribbing information about the most flagrantly batshit, rattling, moving blockbuster ever produced。

I already love this movie and the Mad Max series overall (mostly this one movie, though), and now I have a completely new appreciation for this masterpiece。

This was fun if you enjoyed the movie。

great organization of a collection of interviews from actors and filmmakers who worked on easily one of the great moves of all time。 my only real qualm with this book is that it reiterates the travesty committed by the academy not giving fury road best picture and by snubbing theron for a best actress nom。 the nom should have been the first step。 she clearly should have won。

I remember going to watch the movie, thinking it would be another one of those action blockbusters similar to the Fast and the Furious franchise。 When I left, I was speechless。 Mad Max – Fury Road was an action film, no doubt, but it was also a whole lot more。 The background, the story, art production, costumes, leads; it was nothing short of a revelation。 It’s also no surprise that the movie took so long to make。 Reading about the film makes me love it all the more。 A brilliant book that is a m I remember going to watch the movie, thinking it would be another one of those action blockbusters similar to the Fast and the Furious franchise。 When I left, I was speechless。 Mad Max – Fury Road was an action film, no doubt, but it was also a whole lot more。 The background, the story, art production, costumes, leads; it was nothing short of a revelation。 It’s also no surprise that the movie took so long to make。 Reading about the film makes me love it all the more。 A brilliant book that is a must-own companion piece to the film。 。。。more

Cool! It's fascinating to know the background on what became one of my favorite movies ever。 This book goes beyond the "how" and into the "why," but it's still shy of a critical appraisal (I'll get that elsewhere)。 That said, it's definitely more about the craft than the art。 There's also the constant noblesse oblige, which is never a good look, but it's for George Miller, so yes I do think I will let it slide。A little thing I don't love is the lack of investigative voice: What little original, n Cool! It's fascinating to know the background on what became one of my favorite movies ever。 This book goes beyond the "how" and into the "why," but it's still shy of a critical appraisal (I'll get that elsewhere)。 That said, it's definitely more about the craft than the art。 There's also the constant noblesse oblige, which is never a good look, but it's for George Miller, so yes I do think I will let it slide。A little thing I don't love is the lack of investigative voice: What little original, non-quotational language exists in this book is limited to transitional phrasing and heavy-handed setups。 Doesn't dampen the fun or the revelations within, but it was clearly the easier way to write and edit this book (as opposed to creating context around the oral history of the movie)。 。。。more

A must-read for anyone who appreciates the movie。 I did expect it to be a little more revealing, especially in terms of the on-set drama among the film's stars。 It's mainly it's the story of a brilliant and obsessed director bringing his vision to the screen with the help of an army of people over the course of 20 years。 More than anything, the book reveals how miraculous it is that the movie got made at all, let alone that it's the masterpiece that it is。 A must-read for anyone who appreciates the movie。 I did expect it to be a little more revealing, especially in terms of the on-set drama among the film's stars。 It's mainly it's the story of a brilliant and obsessed director bringing his vision to the screen with the help of an army of people over the course of 20 years。 More than anything, the book reveals how miraculous it is that the movie got made at all, let alone that it's the masterpiece that it is。 。。。more

What a book…what a lovely book!! Long story short, this movie should not have worked。 It was the 4th installation of a franchise from the 80s, the main star was recast, and there was no script。 Needless to say, the fact that this movie became a huge success is insane。 This is such a cool and interesting history of how this movie was made。 It’s fascinating till the very end。 If you like Fury Road or just enjoy film history, pick this one up!

THIS。 BOOK。 ROCKS。Despite the fact that Mad Max: Fury Road is one of my favorite movies of the last decade, Kyle Buchanan's oral history of the making of the film, is an exceptional and wildly entertaining read。 Buchanan weaves hundreds of personal and media interviews into a stunning, often contradictory, but also engrossing narrative about how this piece of film-making came together。 I was actually reminded a lot of Taylor Jenkins Reid's Daisy Jones and the Six when reading this book。 That VH1 THIS。 BOOK。 ROCKS。Despite the fact that Mad Max: Fury Road is one of my favorite movies of the last decade, Kyle Buchanan's oral history of the making of the film, is an exceptional and wildly entertaining read。 Buchanan weaves hundreds of personal and media interviews into a stunning, often contradictory, but also engrossing narrative about how this piece of film-making came together。 I was actually reminded a lot of Taylor Jenkins Reid's Daisy Jones and the Six when reading this book。 That VH1 Behind the Music, style of reportage is used in this book so effectively and gave me a new appreciation of an already fantastic film。 If you're looking for a fun book for the spring/summer, I definitely recommend this。 。。。more

This is a very personal book to me。 It is an interview book on the making of Mad Max: Fury Road。 I know many of the players, including George Miller and played a role in in the two decades long journey of getting this movie to the screen。 Not a large enough role to be featured in the book, but large enough to be personally interested in the journeys of the others on the trip, and of knowing some of the backstory that doesn’t appear in the book。That being said, reading this was more than the insi This is a very personal book to me。 It is an interview book on the making of Mad Max: Fury Road。 I know many of the players, including George Miller and played a role in in the two decades long journey of getting this movie to the screen。 Not a large enough role to be featured in the book, but large enough to be personally interested in the journeys of the others on the trip, and of knowing some of the backstory that doesn’t appear in the book。That being said, reading this was more than the inside pleasure of reading the diaries of fellow travelers。 The interlaced interviews tell the story of the journey — how difficult it was to keep the project going, how many different players and different visions have to be melded into a film, and most of all the impossibly difficult of directing — keeping a unique creative vision focused even when others don’s share it, or understand it。 You have to both a creative and military genius to deal with the logistics of a difficult movie — and there is hardly any more difficult than this one — and maintain that vision。Cudos to the entire cast and crew。 Cudos to to George Miller。 And thanks for opening the kimono just a bit。 。。。more

It’s kind of shocking there hasn’t been a definitive “making of” for what many, myself included, consider the greatest action movie of all time。 Honestly wish this were like hundreds of pages longer but as it stands, this is a definitive text for the film but also filmmaking as a whole。
